The 2002 - 2003 internships are closed.

CIDA Internships: Policy Research International (PRI) is participating in the CIDA-funded Youth International Internship Program and is offering one internship. This can provide an interesting opportunity for an appropriate intern to gain professional experience in certain issues of energy and sustainable development in Ghana.

PRI has developed excellent relationships with a broad range of agencies and organizations in each country. The intern will be actively involved in PRI's ongoing multi-country work on small scale renewable energy under the guidance of PRI's director, Dr. Rath. The purpose of the internship is to directly involve the intern in some of the research, writing, and evaluation work on the projects and to provide the intern with professional work experiences while making positive contributions to sustainable development.

Position Description: The main objective of the internship will be to undertake a review, building on earlier work undertaken by PRI, to determine the promising, small scale, renewable energy technologies, for decentralized rural applications; examine a number of such applications both through existing literature and documents available at the host institution and also through field visits to selected institutions implementing such solutions as part of the rural development efforts; and determine current barriers and opportunities for their wider application and explore the impacts on the beneficiary population.

The intern will spend the first six weeks in Ottawa to review material specific to the work assignment in Ghana and to undertake formal and informal training in working in a different cultural environment. This will be followed by four months in Ghana  where the work will include familiarization with the host institution, developing contacts with key informants, collection of existing information, review of the material, developing the field visits schedule, documenting findings, reviewing with local experts and Ottawa office and then preparing a final document before departure. The results will be presented at a seminar in both Ghana and Ottawa. The intern will interact with a variety of counterparts on policy and program design and on evaluating international development projects while conducting field research under the guidance of PRI's director, Dr. Rath. The work will involve research, writing, and evaluation work on the projects in Ghana, and will provide professional work experiences while making positive contributions to national and global development efforts and the Millennium Development Goals.

Requirements: To qualify for these positions you must be a Canadian citizen or be eligible to work in Canada, between the ages of 19 and 30; and, hold a recent college or university degree.

Candidates with graduate training and / or any prior experience, or with specialization in Economics, Business, Energy, Engineering, Development Studies or related fields, will be given preference.

It is also expected that the interns have computer skills, experience with web publication, research and writing skills, and some knowledge of energy and sustainable development issues.

PRI expects that the internship will be for a total period of between six and eight months. This includes a four-month work assignment abroad.
